Ustad
Siddique Ahmad Khan was born in Moradabad in 1914. He
began his training in Sarangi and vocal music with his
father late Ustad Rafique Ahmad khan. He studied Sarangi
extensively for about 20 years with his maternal grandfather
late Ustad Ghaseet Khan and Ustad Amman Khan.
Khansohab took up employment with Calcutta Radio in
1945 where he got the opportunity to accompany several
stalwarts of vocal music, like Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali
Khan, Pandit Omkarnath Thakur, Ustad Salamat and Nazakat
Ali, and Aftab-e-Mausiqui Ustad Faiyazz Khan. All of
them highly appreciated his music and urged him to stay
in Calcutta.
However he resigned from the post after 2 years and
returned to Moradabad. Hence after he was intermittently
employed with the radio station at Ranchi and Guwahati,
but mostly dedicated himself to training his children
disciples and carrying on the legacy of the gharana.
In around 1972, he moved to Delhi to stay with his son
Ghulam Sabir Khan and performed extensively for All
India Radio there. Here, he accompanied yet more maestros
like Ustad Nisar Khan, Ustad Sarfaraj Khan, Ustad Sharafat
Hussain Khan, and Taan Samrat Ustad Naseer Ahmad Khan.
Khansahab has composed many bandishes, taranas and thumris
in various raags under the pen name ‘Sanam Piya’. He
trained a large number of disciples, treating them like
his own children. Though he did not receive any awards,
he used to believe that his disciples are his true award.
Indeed, his sons, grandsons and other disciples continue
to carry forward the legacy of this musical genius.
